Shooting on the field at high school football games is a lot of fun. It is also a challenge photographically. The lighting changes over the 3 hours of the game. You go from natural sunlight to shade to stadium lighting. And, depending on the stadium, the light could be really good, or about as good as what you would expect in a blackout…

#44 B. Gueth breaks through the line for a gain during the Dublin Jerome vs Hilliard Darby football game (Sept 4, 2009)

I shot the Dublin Jerome High School Football team as they visited Hilliard Darby High School on Friday, September 4, 2009. Darby ended up winning this see-saw battle. Both teams were well coached and looked like they both wanted to win. Ultimately, Hilliard Darby prevailed and won 28-25.
Photographically, I shot the first half without flash and with the 1.4x extender on the 70-200 f/2.8 lens (which made the lens an f/4.0 minimum aperture). ISO of 800 and generally 1/500-1/200th of a second shutter speed. In the second half, I removed the 1.4x extender and shot at f/2.8. This gained me back some shutter speed, but not by much. I used a flash at ETTL to fill and gain me back some exposure – Shooting at manual and with the flash at High-Speed Sync, I was able to get some really good exposures. For more of these pictures, please contact me as they should be posted on a news site in the near future.
